PERFUMER’S NOTE:

This was not easy…this took time…this took years.

Bright, bittersweet, and deliciously grassy, Japanese Sencha green tea is the loveliest and most distinctive thing I’ve ever smelled. With no “essential oil of green tea” in existence, and artificial fragrance oils being a sad and usually toxic substitute I’d never touch let alone offer to others, the challenge was irresistible:

Create a natural fragrance that smells like the freshest, brightest, greenest of green teas, using a multitude of plants to imply this most particular of scents. After what seemed an age was spent achieving a near perfect blend of essential oils and absolutes, one element remained…the carrier.

I require every ingredient in a product I wear/eat/offer to have an intrinsic benefit; I don’t believe in dilutions, and using alcohol to carry these oils would be just that — a dilution with no benefit (and a cheap one at that). Even quality perfume oils are nearly always precious oils diluted in an inexpensive oil. No, the carrier must be an essential component of the perfume, precious in its own right, impossible to do without, and, like the scent itself, impossible to replicate.

And so it happened…the purest organic Chinese tea seed oil was infused with my finest and very favorite organic green Japanese Sencha tea (sold here in the Emporium under the title “Emilie”) over a great length of time, the leaves transforming the incredibly nourishing but nearly odorless oil into a brilliant green elixir, smelling of lightly roasted leaves.

Now…now my near perfect blend of oils and absolutes were added to the tea-infused tea oil, and here was my test:

I opened a golden tin of my favorite green Sencha tea.

I opened the bottle of scent I’d worked so hard on for so long.

I closed my eyes and sniffed both, beautiful, natural items before me.

I could not tell the difference.

This is a truly Unisex scent, as I believe all scents are (despite the dividing marketing). Tea does not have a gender, and neither does chocolate if that’s what you’d care to smell like. Perfectly alright with me. In fact, it’s better than alright.

New 4 O’Clock Tea Blend

at Emilie Autumn’s Asylum Emporium

Asylum Emporium description:

Four O’Clock Tea: 4 oz. Tin

A fresh and flowery herbal blend with the scent of an English garden and just a hint of natural sweetness, perfect for 4 P.M. teatime and 4 A.M. insomniacs. “Four O’Clock” is perfect anytime, and is particularly conducive to a good night’s sleep.

All ingredients are Certified Organic and hand blended and packaged in small batches within the Asylum. 4 oz. tin makes approximately 25-30 cups of tea (depending on your brewing style).

Notes & Ingredients:

Does not contain caffeine.

Hungarian chamomile flowers, American peppermint and spearmint leaves, French lavender buds, Egyptian lemon verbena, Croatian cornflowers, Chinese rose petals, and Stevia leaf from Israel.

Brewing Instructions:

Use one heaping teaspoon of tea per 8 oz. of fresh spring water (or the best quality water you can obtain). Heat water to just below boiling and steep to taste. There is less danger of over-steeping than with actual caffeinated teas — if you brew “Four O’Clock” too strong, simply add more hot water, increasing steeping duration and temperature each time. Tea may be used for several steepings.

Sweeten with honey or unrefined sugar if desired (we love organic coconut sugar in the Asylum).

"Four O’Clock" is also lovely over ice.

Leftover tea? Soothe and cleanse your skin by toning it with this highly nutritional herbal blend. Simply splash onto skin, or apply with a cotton pad.

Benefits (besides tasting great):

Chamomile is renowned for its calming, relaxing effect, especially useful before bedtime, or during any time of mental or physical stress. Spearmint and peppermint soothe the stomach, have a cooling effect on the body, and refresh without caffeine. Lavender promotes relaxation, and offers support for emotional stress, anxiety, and depression. Lemon verbena calms nerves and eases digestion. Cornflowers aren’t just pretty to look at, they’re also beneficial for digestive issues, and increase immunity to infection. Rose petals contain vitamin C and antioxidants, and are useful in detoxing the body, boosting immunity, and soothing menstrual cramps. Stevia leaf provides natural sweetness, antioxidants, and is also know to help stabilize blood sugar levels and ease hypertension.
