This was not easy…this took time…this took years.
Bright, bittersweet, and deliciously grassy, Japanese Sencha green tea is the loveliest and most distinctive thing I’ve ever smelled. With no “essential oil of green tea” in existence, and artificial fragrance oils being a sad and usually toxic substitute I’d never touch let alone offer to others, the challenge was irresistible:
Create a natural fragrance that smells like the freshest, brightest, greenest of green teas, using a multitude of plants to imply this most particular of scents. After what seemed an age was spent achieving a near perfect blend of essential oils and absolutes, one element remained…the carrier.
I require every ingredient in a product I wear/eat/offer to have an intrinsic benefit; I don’t believe in dilutions, and using alcohol to carry these oils would be just that — a dilution with no benefit (and a cheap one at that). Even quality perfume oils are nearly always precious oils diluted in an inexpensive oil. No, the carrier must be an essential component of the perfume, precious in its own right, impossible to do without, and, like the scent itself, impossible to replicate.
And so it happened…the purest organic Chinese tea seed oil was infused with my finest and very favorite organic green Japanese Sencha tea (sold here in the Emporium under the title “Emilie”) over a great length of time, the leaves transforming the incredibly nourishing but nearly odorless oil into a brilliant green elixir, smelling of lightly roasted leaves.
Now…now my near perfect blend of oils and absolutes were added to the tea-infused tea oil, and here was my test:
I opened a golden tin of my favorite green Sencha tea.
I opened the bottle of scent I’d worked so hard on for so long.
I closed my eyes and sniffed both, beautiful, natural items before me.
I could not tell the difference.
This is a truly Unisex scent, as I believe all scents are (despite the dividing marketing). Tea does not have a gender, and neither does chocolate if that’s what you’d care to smell like. Perfectly alright with me. In fact, it’s better than alright.
